CATESOL Orange County Chapter
Carol Bander Graduate Student Initiative
Carol Bander Graduate Student Initiative is a grant co-established by the CATESOL Orange County Chapter iand the CATESOL Education Foundation in spring 2019 to encourage TESOL graduate students in Orange County to get a head start on their professional development and become active members of CATESOL. The program offers free admission to Orange County workshops with the hopes that participants will develop lasting relationships and serve in the organization. To be selected, students must apply, attend an Orange County Chapter meeting, and write a report on their experiences after participating in the program.

About Jody Schulz
"I have been teaching non-credit Adult ESL through RSCCD for the past 5 years. I have also taught oversees for over 5 years. I want to expand my teaching career to include teaching credit ESL classes at colleges and universities, so I am now studying to receive my MA TESOL degree at Biola University."
As a recipient of the GSI scholarship
Jody said..."I would write a report about what I've learned at the workshop and include a copy of any important handouts. I would also try out various methods and activities that are taught there and write a reflection based on my experience of experimenting with them. I will submit this to the head of the TESOL department for review and after revising it, I will ask for her to share the information with the other students in the program."
On the reason she was selected
Jody had some great insight into the benefits of attending the CATESOL chapter workshops: professional development, networking with other TESOL professionals, and continuing education in teaching best practices. Her proposal to report back to the TESOL department at Biola was also a great show of initiative what would help with outreach for the chapter.
