Introduction
This special grant award focuses on mentoring and training five ESL/ELL educators from CATESOL’s levels (K-12, Higher Education, Community College, Adult Education and Intensive English Programs) about best practices regarding racial and social justice, curriculum redesign, and implicit bias training.
Background
There are 5 million Emergent Bilinguals in the U.S.  Within the state of California, there are 1.1 million Emergent Bilinguals (see Appendix A).  In other words, California is home to one-fifth of the nation’s English Language Learners.  The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Grant, in accord with the CATESOL mission, advocates for and promotes racial and social justice within and beyond the classrooms of ESL/ELL educators.

Application Process
  1. Teachers who are interested will complete an expression of interest (EOI) form. Simply answer basic personal contact info and five questions.
  2. The new EOI will be open in December 2021. The responses will be reviewed by the end of March by a small committee.
  3. The selection committee hopes to choose up to 5 teachers to participate in the 2021 calendar year.

Selected participants will receive/do
  1. sign an agreement for the applicable year,
  2. receive copies of racial and social justice textbook: Social Justice in English Language Teaching (TESOL publication) - $61 each,
  3. attend six online meetings per year for reading and discussion in a collaborative mentoring study group format with CATESOL DEI (March – September),
  4. join a study group, read from the text, and prepare for discussion; each participant creates an application project to implement in their own educational setting (using Google Meet/Zoom – 1 hour limit)
