Grants & Awards

The CATESOL Education Foundation has established several grant projects based on instructions from donors. Below is a listing of the currently funded projects. Your donation can be designated for one of these projects, or you may contact us to discuss a new project.

Starting in 2007, at the request of and with funding from Gwendolyn T. Schwabe, past president of CATESOL, founder of the ESL Program at UC Davis, and known to all as Tippy, UC Davis MA and PhD candidates participate in CATESOL activities and become better prepared for the world of TESOL while they are still in graduate school. Grantees receive a two-year membership to CATESOL and have their registration fees paid for regional, chapter, and annual conferences while being mentored by competent university instructors. They are also encouraged to volunteer at CATESOL events and to present. More on this project in the CATESOL News, Fall 2012

CSU Fullerton Leadership Grant

Hollywood Classroom Learning Project (view participant testimonials)

The Hollywood Classroom Learning Project, co-sponsored by the CATESOL Education Foundation and Rock Talk, Inc., takes brain-based teaching and learning theory and applies it to grammar/writing/listening and speaking lessons accompanying the viewing of popular recent Hollywood films. Films are chosen based on relevance to students’ lives, emotional engagement potential, and ease of understanding. This magical combination optimizes language acquisition using a multi-modality approach. Check it out at thehollywoodclassroom.com or email Chas Ferry at [email protected]. Memorial, Legacy & Charitable Programs

Sumako Kimizuka - Our Founding Donor whose generous donation to CATESOL marked the beginning of the CATESOL Education Foundation. Some of these funds were used to cover the start up costs of the Foundation and have been used to support non-political events at CATESOL Conferences.

Gordon Johnson Memorial - A monetary award to an ELD teacher who creates innovative classroom materials. Having served as an ESL editor and sales individual over the course of his forty-year career, Mr. Gordon Johnson valued the creativity demonstrated by many ESL instructors. It is for this reason that this award, created in his honor, will recognize ESL instructors who have developed or designed particularly innovative ESL materials or lesson plans.

Application deadline: September 30, 2016.  For details, see the announcement here.

Gail Weinstein Memorial - A monetary award to an ESL teacher or graduate student who creates curricular materials for the ESL classroom. Friends and family of Ms Weinstein set up this award.

CATESOL Chapters - Several of the CATESOL Chapters throughout California and Nevada hold fund-raising events and make local awards to members or give donations to non-profit organizations in their areas, such as the 2013 International Rescue ESL Program and the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services ESL classes.

CATESOL Regional Conference Stipend - Need Help Attending Your Local Regional Conference? As part of the mission of the CATESOL Education Foundation to provide education opportunities to teachers of English learners, the Foundation offers small stipends to help cover your regional conference registration and mileage. Prospective CATESOL members who would like to apply for a Regional Stipend must be part-time teachers of English learners or students attending school to become TESOL professionals.
